Tooth whitening at home
We don't recommend bleaching or whitening at home without discussing it with your dentist first.
Tooth whitening offers the possibility of giving you a brighter smile with the minimum of fuss. You know that whitening your smile is one of the least expensive and least invasive ways to enhance your appearance. You believe that your smile is the first thing others notice about you. And, like it or not, it says more about you than any other physical feature.
The most common method, and the technique with the broadest approval in the dental profession, is the at home bleaching technique. Dentists have found this to be the most predictably effective way of lightening your smile. As research in this area continues, developments may offer alternatives that work even more quickly.
At home bleaching involves having moulds taken of your teeth. These moulds are sent off to a specialist lab where custom trays are made to fit exactly around your teeth. They are extremely thin - less than 1mm. The whole process takes about 2 weeks. We then fit them in the surgery and show you how to use the bleaching gel.
Normally wearing the trays for at least 2 hours a day for 2 weeks is enough to give you a really bright smile.
Bleaching doesn't work on all tooth types - tetracycline staining for example - so it is important to discuss this with your dentist.
Your dentist may offer 'power bleaching' alongside this. This involves the use of a very concentrated solution of Carbamide Peroxide (40%+) and a method of heating the gel - usually with a heating light source. Dramatic lightening can be achieved in short period of time - sometimes less than an hour! Often the 'Power Bleaching' is combined with the at home technique to give you a fast start.
