Smoking

You are no doubt aware of the risks of cancer and heart disease posed by smoking, but did you know it can make your teeth drop out too? Smoking has a direct effect on your mouth in a number of ways. It makes you much more prone to gum disease and makes any gum disease you do have, worse.

Smoking acts to suppress the immune system in your mouth. This means that the body is less able to kill the bacteria that cause gum disease. Also, smoking reduces the blood flow to your mouth. This can mean you don't get the normal warning signs that early gum disease gives - bleeding gums. Because gum disease is painless until quite late, you may not even know you have a problem.

If you smoke it is really important that you keep up regular visits to your dentist or hygienist. Let them know you smoke - they can be especially vigilant for early signs of gum disease. They can also look for the early signs of mouth cancer - early diagnosis is really beneficial.

If you decide you'd like to quit, they can advise you of some useful sources of help -smoking quit-lines and clinics.
